Quali sono le migliori opere fantasy del 2009? Una prima risposta è arrivata con l'annuncio di Locus Online che indica autori, artisti e testi selezionati per il World Fantasy Award 2010.

In particolare, i cinque finalisti per la categoria miglior romanzo fantasy sono:

Blood of Ambrose, James Enge (Pyr), un potente fantasy dinastico con interessanti sfumature di miti arturiani. 

The Red Tree, Caitlín R. Kiernan (Roc).

Una storia che sfiora l'horror tra magioni sperdute nelle campagne del Rhode Island, manoscritti incompiuti e una quercia antica che mette strane radici.

The City & The City, China Miéville (Macmillan UK/ Del Rey).

Mièville si allontana dal New Weird creando un mondo sia fantastico che ambiguamente familiare, dove i misteri non finiscono con la soluzione di un omicidio.

Finch, Jeff VanderMeer (Underland).

Il terzo libro di Vandermeer ambientato a Ambergris è una rielaborazione del romando poliziesco hard-boiled in un mondo dove gli esseri umani lottano per minare l'autorità dei "funghi" senzienti, un secolo dopo gli avvenimenti narrati in Shriek— An Afterword (2006).

In Great Waters, Kit Whitfield (Jonathan Cape UK/Del Rey).

L'autore crea una Terra fantasy drasticamente cambiata ma perfettamente riconoscibile: la Storia è stata alterata dalle creature del mare che, dopo una fugace apparizione a Venezia nel Medio Evo, qualche secolo dopo controllano i mari e vogliono che i regnanti della Terra siano metà umani e metà marini.
